This year's 4-H & Youth Day Camp program in Halifax have been set.
“The Cooperative Extension Service and camp staff have pulled together to plan a program that will be very exciting to this summer’s campers,” said Joe Long, director of the Rural Life Center. “The life skills that campers learn while at camp are extremely important to making them into complete and well-rounded, positive and contributing adults. Life skills such as teamwork, self-reliance, courage, independence, and getting along with others are all things that youth need to learn in today’s global society to be successful in the future.” Long said camp this summer is going to have a fresh, new look but still retain some of the traditional camp activities “that have made 4-H Camp great for so many all of these years.”

New themes this year include an Exploris Camp and a Frontier Camp.
“Exploris Camp would be a great camp for those looking for a variety of activities and if the outdoors is your thing, then the Frontier Camp will offer a wide variety of western themes including an end of the week field trip in search of gold.”
Long said much of what is done revolves around 4-H curriculums targeted towards healthy lifestyles, outdoor living, and helping to preserve the environment.
Traditional field trips such as canoeing, swimming, and fishing, as well as some larger trips to the Nauticus Museum in Norfolk and the Virginia Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach are planned during the Castaway Camp.
A couple of new programs during the summer will be the addition of an archery program as well as model rocketry. “During our Hunger Games Camp campers will really be able to put these new skills into practice. We will also expand The Arts Camp this year to include not only art, but also music and drama.”
Expect to do some outdoor cooking and take a field trip to a local restaurant to tour a commercial kitchen during Iron Chef Cooking Camp all leading to a cooking competition at the end of the week.
