
The Roanoke Rapids police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:
May 30
Around 12:30 a.m., Officer Joey Spragins responded to investigate a disturbance at Hampton Inn.
Staff told him there were complaints of a room being loud and people coming and going.
Spragins went to the room and found numerous teenagers and alcohol inside.
Christian Terrell Newell, 17, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited for possession of spirituous liquor under 21 years of age.
Newell was released until his August 7 court date.
Sergeant Richie White assisted.
Around 2:15 a.m., Officer Ryan Cross stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on East Tenth Street. During the stop the driver gave a false name.
Cross learned the driver’s correct name was Tavio Lamont Taylor, 29, of Weldon.
Taylor had outstanding orders for arrest from Northampton and Halifax counties.
Cross arrested Taylor on the outstanding charges and also charged him with driving while license revoked and resisting/delaying/obstructing an officer.
Taylor was given a $41,500 bond and an August 8 court date.
Lieutenant Charles Burnette and Officer Patrick Smith assisted.
Around 2:45 a.m., White and Spragins responded to a domestic disturbance on Chockoyotte Street. While speaking with the victim they noticed injuries.
When officers located the suspect, Laurice D. Hawkins, 33, of Roanoke Rapids, behind the house, he ran back inside where he was arrested and charged with assault on a female.
Hawkins was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to the domestic nature of the case and assigned an August 7 court date.
Burnette assisted.
Around 1:30 p.m., Officer Chris Biggerstaff responded to a larceny call at Walmart.
Loss prevention told Biggerstaff Brandon Ray Kirkland, 23, of Woodland took an item from the store and then attempted to return it for money at the customer service desk.
Biggerstaff arrested and charged Kirkland with obtaining property by false pretense, attempted obtaining property by false pretense and shoplifting.
Kirkland was given a $2,000 bond and a July 8 court date.
May 31
Around 1:30 a.m., White and Spragins responded to Halifax Regional Medical Center about a disturbance.
Hospital staff told the officers Charlie Lee Baugham, 59, of Roanoke Rapids, was making threatening gesture towards staff, refusing treatment and refusing to leave the property.
Spragins arrested and charged Baugham with trespassing.
Baugham was given a $500 bond and an August 8 court date.
Around 1:30 a.m., Cross was on routine patrol when he noticed a person walking in the middle of the road with no shirt on.
Cross spoke with Quanterris Stephenson, 16, of Weldon, who was irate, loud, and confrontational. Cross could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Stephenson.
Cross arrested and charged Stephenson with intoxicated and disruptive behavior and consuming alcohol under age.
Stephenson was given a $1,000 bond and a court date of August 8.
Smith assisted.
Around 1:45 a.m., White was at Halifax Regional Medical Center on an investigation when a vehicle pulled into the parking lot with loud music playing.
White went over to have the driver, Darell McDonald Edmonds, turn down the music, but smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
After conducting a field sobriety test, White arrested Edmonds for driving while impaired.
Edmonds, who was out on bond for another charge, was given a $20,000 bond and a court date of July 10.
Around 8:30 p.m., Spragins responded to a call about a trespasser at Halifax Regional Medical Center. Hospital staff told Spragins Cornell Travis Pender, 29, of Scotland Neck, was refusing to leave the property.
Spragins arrested and charged Pender with trespassing.
He was given a $500 bond and July 24 court date.
