A woman remains on the lam and a man was arrested after attempting to flee following a Monday afternoon chase which ended up yielding pot, pills and a pistol.

The attempted traffic stop, according to Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty, was initiated by the City County Drug Task Force shortly after 4:30 p.m. when Agent D.J. Hundley and Roanoke Rapids Investigator C. L. Babb were in the downtown area.

Hundley noticed a motor vehicle violation and attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of Washington Street.

The vehicle sped away but finally stopped on Washington Street Extension where the passenger got out and ran away.

The driver, Tya Carrie Louise Deloatch, 23, of Jefferson Street, was told not to move but instead sped away.

Hundley assisted Babb with locating the man, Deunta Qumae Squire, 25, who was arrested a short distance away.

Roanoke Rapids Lieutenant Perry Parks and Sergeant Daniel Jenkins, with his dog Pocock, arrived to assist, along with task force Agent D. McKeel and task force Captain A.M. Harris.

Pocock located a book bag which contained a handgun, a digital scale, nine Adderall pills, and approximately 550 grams of marijuana.

Hundley charged Squire with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, simple possession of Schedule II controlled substance, resisting a public officer, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a stolen firearm, which was reported stolen by a city resident.

Squire was given a $50,000 bond and confined to the Halifax County Detention Center with a July 22 court date.

There are outstanding warrants for the arrest of Deloatch, who faces charges of displaying a fictitious registration number plate, speeding, felony speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked and resisting a public officer.

“We encourage Deloatch to turn herself in to law enforcement,” Hasty said. “Citizens are encouraged to call the Halifax County Central Communications non-emergency number at 252 583-1991 if they know the whereabouts of Tya Carrie Louise Deloatch.”

Street value of the marijuana seized is approximately $2,700.

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office and Gaston Police Department also responded to the area to assist.
