Northampton sets sights on Neighborhood Watch

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith is concerned about the recent daytime breaking and entering of residences.

In a statement today, Smith announced the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office would like to assist the neighborhoods in forming a Neighborhood Watch Program.

“Northampton County is built on the strength of our citizens. Every day, we encounter situations calling upon us to be the eyes and ears of our neighborhoods to assist local law enforcement,” the sheriff said. “Not only does neighborhood watch allow citizens to help in the fight against crime, it is also an opportunity for communities to bond through service by helping our neighbors.”

Smith said the Neighborhood Watch Program draws upon the compassion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand as well to local law enforcement. “Neighborhood Watch Program has become practical in our community, where most families are working and the neighborhoods are deserted during the day. While criminals have attempted to use this to their advantage, the neighborhoods in which citizens have observed and reported suspicious activity have enjoyed lower crime rates and have assisted law enforcement with catching these criminals.” Benefits of starting a Neighborhood Watch Program, the sheriff said, are:

Connects you with your neighbors and local law enforcement in a positive way.

Helps reduce crime in your neighborhood .

Safer and better neighborhoods that are united.

Improves communications between neighbors and law enforcement.

To start a Neighborhood Watch Program is easy, Smith said.

It involves recruiting and organizing as many neighbors as possible and contacting local law enforcement where community concerns can be discussed as well as an action plan drawn up.
