Children and grownups were treated to free hot dogs, snacks and freeze pops as the Roanoke Rapids Police Department held a back to school cookout at the Neighborhood Resource Center on Jackson Street.

There was a bounce house and dunking booth, which not only featured Chief Chuck Hasty as a target, but members of the Roanoke Rapids High School football team. The Roanoke Rapids Fire Department set up a hose which served as a water feature so children could run through.
Several children won backpacks through a drawing held by Discount Tire.
