Inmate charged in CO stabbing moved to Butner

An inmate charged with stabbing a Caledonia correctional officer Thursday has been transferred to the state’s highest security unit.

State Department of Public Safety spokesman Keith Acree confirmed John D. Hampton was moved to Polk Correctional Institution in Butner.
Thus far no date for a court appearance has been set, state court records as well as confirmation from the Halifax County Clerk Courts Office show.
Hampton, 36, faces charges of attempted murder and assault on a government official with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said earlier today the attempted murder charge was lodged due to the extent of the injuries sustained by the officer, Clarence Wade, who was stabbed several times in the upper torso.
The stabbing occurred at the prison located in Tillery around 6 p.m.
Tripp said earlier today a motive has not yet been established in the case where Hampton, an inmate serving time for first-degree kidnapping in Mitchell County, allegedly assaulted Wade with a homemade weapon.
Wade was once a sergeant with the sheriff’s office and has been employed with the state Department of Public Safety for six years.
