A Bertie County grandmother is refusing to return her grandchild to its mother in Halifax County and Enfield police have filed a warrant for her arrest for felony child abduction.
The matter stems from the reported breach of a verbal agreement between Zelda Loraine Cousins, 54, and the child’s mother.
That agreement, according to Detective Willie Murphy, stipulated the child was to be returned to its mother on Christmas Day.
Murphy said in a statement, however, the child’s mother filed a report which says Cousins refused to return the child.
The grandmother was allowed to keep the child over Christmas.
Cousins lives in the Lewiston-Woodville area of Bertie County.
Investigation and interviews show there is no reason to believe the child is in danger.
Cousins was last seen driving a gray Nissan Sentra with North Carolina tags EAL-7397.
