
State Attorney General Roy Cooper will be the keynote speaker for the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce's 64th annual meeting.
The event, according to a statement from the chamber, will be January 30 at The Centre at Halifax Community College in Weldon from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
The evening event will feature honors, networking opportunities, dinner and speaker presentations.
The attorney general is the head of the North Carolina Department of Justice.
The department has four primary functions:
To provide legal representation to state agencies.
Assist local law enforcement in fighting crime and prosecuting cases. Provide training and standards for law enforcement.
Protect North Carolina consumers.
Born in Nash County, Cooper was raised in a rural community and worked in tobacco fields during the summer as a teenager.
He received the Morehead Scholarship and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and also earned a Juris Doctor degree from UNC.
After practicing with his family's law firm for a number of years, Cooper was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1986 and named to the North Carolina Senate in 1991.
He continued to practice law as the managing partner of the law firm Fields & Cooper in Rocky Mount.
Also, Rick Niswander will return to speak on the state of our economy. Niswander is the vice chancellor for Administration & Finance at East Carolina University.
He has taught international, intermediate, and introductory financial accounting, as well as a graduate accounting course that encompasses tax, financial, cost and governmental.
He holds a Ph.D. in accounting from Texas A&M University and a BSBA in accounting from Idaho State University.
