Duke Energy announced a $35,000 grant to Sylvan Heights Bird Park through the Duke Energy Foundation.

The majority of the grant will be used to support Sylvan Heights formal education programs and science events.

This portion of the grant continues a Duke Energy-sponsored program that assists elementary school students’ participation in Sylvan Heights educational programs, with an emphasis on students from economically-distressed regions in North Carolina.

These programs increase student understanding of waterfowl, wetlands and the broader natural world. Teachers can find out if their classes are eligible to take advantage of the educational funds by calling Lee Peoples, education coordinator, at 252-826-3186.

The grant also provides a two-year sponsorship of the Landing Zone, Sylvan Heights popular interactive exhibit in which visitors hand feed parakeets and flamingos.

“We are very grateful for Duke Energy’s continued support,” Peoples said. “As a small non-profit located in rural Eastern North Carolina., it is quite a challenge getting funding to support the work we do in education, conservation and research. That’s why we are so grateful that Duke Energy has recognized the work we are doing and made a contribution to help us continue and grow.”

“Sylvan Heights Bird Park is a unique asset to Eastern North Carolina and waterfowl preservation,” said Mike Hughes, Duke Energy’s vice president of Local Government and Community Relations. “Duke Energy’s funds provide opportunities for students across the state to see majestic birds from around the world and broaden their appreciation for science, all while having fun.”
