After realizing the fruits of their labor through a lemonade stand, the owner of Blessed Assurance Summer Camp plans to return the kindness the community showed her daycare.
In the waning days of June and early days of this month, the children at the daycare on Ransome Street in Roanoke Rapids opened a lemonade and snack stand to earn enough money to buy an inflatable water slide.
They exceeded that goal, owner Tammy Moseley said today, and were also able to buy a new child's basketball set as well as arts and craft supplies.
The ambition of the youngsters, Moseley said, apparently struck a chord with the community and the children made a profit of between $800 to $900 for seven days of work selling lemonade at $1 for a large and 50 cents for a small. “People bought stuff but would give you $20 for lemonade,” she said, explaining later, “Maybe it was because they worked for something. They (the children) say 'I worked for it.'”
A wide shot of the slide.
Customers came from beyond Ransome Street, Moseley said. “They came from all over town and from Emporia.”
Moseley's daughter, Hannah, who helps with the daycare, said, “I think it really showed them if they worked for something they will get it. I think they really worked hard and deserved this.”
Hayden Elias, one the children who attends the daycare, said, “It's so cool.”
Said Brody Salmon, another attendee, “I learned about work.”
The lemonade stand will be back next summer, Moseley said, and now she is trying to figure a way to repay the kindness the community showed her daycare. “We just want to be able to do something for the community and the love people have shown.”
