Detective Bobby Martin said work by officers Terrence Tyler, Greg Colston, Gorton Williams and Detective Jeff Davis led to the arrest of Tony Lynn Jenkins, 38, of Roanoke Rapids, on numerous charges related to the case.
Jenkins, who was released from prison last August, was jailed Monday afternoon on $75,000 bond and has an August 27 court date.
The investigation began shortly after 7:15 a.m. Monday when Williams responded to a breaking and entering call at the garage area of Bones Toyota. Numerous items were taken, including tools, and a car was stolen, Martin said.
A break in the case came when Tyler and Williams responded to the State Employee's Credit Union about a man dressed as a woman trying to pass a check that was not legitimate. The man was identified as Jenkins, who has crossed-dressed while committing crimes in the past, and Williams noticed items in Jenkins' car that reportedly belonged to the dealership.
The officers took Jenkins into custody and continued investigation by Davis led to the recovery of most of the stolen items as well the car, which was taken from the garage area. A separate investigation into the case led to a charge against Jenkins for allegedly stealing a laptop.
In all, Jenkins faces charges of one count of possession of burglary tools, three counts of obtaining property by false pretense from the credit union matter, one count of breaking and entering, one count of larceny after breaking and entering, one count of felony possession of stolen goods, felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor injury to the personal property reflecting vehicle damage, misdemeanor injury to real property reflecting damage to the business and misdemeanor attempted larceny.
“That he was arrested on the same day was due to the diligent work of Greg Colston, Gorton Williams, Terrence Tyler and Jeff Davis,” Martin said. “The break in the case came when the officers were at the State Employee's Credit Union when the officers found a license plate belonging to the victim. It boils down to good police work. They took the report at 7:17 a.m. and by 12:19 p.m. had the individual in custody and were in the process of recovering stolen property.”
