A Roanoke Rapids man who reportedly pushed away from deputies today faces a crack cocaine charge as well a resisting officers charge.

Captain Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that shortly before 11:45 a.m. he noticed a vehicle traveling slowly through two known drug areas of South Weldon.

Once on Aurelian Springs Road, the driver, later identified as Thomas Fen Weatherwax, 51, reportedly began driving over the posted speed limit and was stopped at Neuse River Road.

Harris said the man gave him consent to search the vehicle. Agent D.C. Dickens arrived to assist in the search.

As Harris was talking to Weatherwax, who was standing outside the car, the captain reportedly noticed something in the man's right hand. When Harris inquired, Weatherwax reportedly pushed away and crack cocaine fell to the ground.

Harris charged Weatherwax with felony possession of cocaine and resisting a public officer. He was jailed on $1,000 unsecured bond and assigned a November 5 court date.
