A weekend arrest by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office has helped bring to an end the investigation of a countywide counterfeit check ring, law enforcement said today.

The sheriff's office, according to Detective Harold Phillips, arrested Joshua Jonathan Jackson, 26, of Roanoke Rapids Saturday.

Sergeant Stanley Rodwell, Corporal M. Brown and Deputy R.B. Biggerstaff arrested Jackson without incident, charging him on warrants for two counts of larceny of a firearm, one count of possession of stolen goods, one count of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and a count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

The charges, Phillips said, stem from the break-in of the victim's truck in September where guns were taken. They have since been returned.

The sheriff's office also served Warren County and Roanoke Rapids warrants to Jackson in the counterfeit scheme, Phillips said.

Detective Bobby Martin of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said Jackson faces a count each of forgery, uttering, possession of a counterfeit instrument, conspire to commit felony larceny and obtaining property by false pretense.

Martin said Jackson's arrest brings to a close the counterfeit check investigation. “I feel pretty confident we've got the group doing the checks.”

The cashing of the bogus checks netted close to $10,000 in cash alone, as well as goods. “It was a way to get quick money,” Martin said.

Jackson was jailed on $23,000 secured bond and has a February 12 court date.
