Concerned Citizens of Tillery this afternoon unveiled a mural by local artist Napoleon Hill depicting the Tillery Farms Homestead.

The mural depicts a Tillery cotton field with a woman drawing water from a well, Tillery farmer Matthew Grant and his mules and a woman hanging quilts made in the Halifax County community on a line to dry.
Matthew Grant was the father of the CCT Executive Director Gary Grant.

The mural unveiling is part of a fundraising effort to refurbish buildings on the grounds of the Tillery Community Center, which includes the Tillery Community Store, the potato curing house and the history house, which was the residence of the community store manager.
In all, CCT is looking to raise $60,000 for the refurbishment project. The next fundraiser will be held at the organization’s annual Kwanzaa event on December 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Community Center in Tillery.
Keynote presenters today included Spencer Wood of Kansas State University; Katherine Charron of North Carolina State University; and Michael Stewart Jr.,a PhD candidate at Howard University.
There was also a special presentation and tribute to the women of the Tillery Resettlement by second generation re-settler Evangeline Grant Briley.
